Simmone Logue, Cammeray

I first became acquainted with Simmone Logue’s cakes years ago through working close to a David Jones Food Hall, which meant that office birthdays and departures were commemorated with an amazing selection of cakes. Someone I worked with raved endlessly about her banana cake, but what I didn’t know is that Simmone Logue also offers catering services as well as a sample of her wares through two café stores.

The Cammeray store is situated in an open air shopping mall and was first visited for a girls’ lunch. We’d missed out on trying the breakfast menu due to the time of day, but the “Grilled ham & cheese” served with side salad offers the same satisfaction as a croque monsieur. The chicken “Soup of the day” is on the oily side but full of flavour, while the “Spinach & fetta filo” is light and flaky.

A poster on one of the back windows advertises that high tea sets are available for $22 per person (minimum 2 person order), which serves as the premise for a second visit to sample some sweet items. There don’t appear to be any set inclusions, rather a selection of the day’s available sweets and savouries form the tea set. Our bottom tier houses slices of pumpkin and fetta tart, followed by a middle tier of individual leek quiche, tomato and olive quiche, mini lemon curd tartlet and chocolate tartlet.

Working our way upwards from the bottom, the middle tier is where we admitted defeat even with the refreshing wedges of green apple acting as palate cleansers. We finish our tea and coffee respectively included with the set for each of us, but we are most thankful that Simmone Logue’s famous cakes – a flourless chocolate cake with raspberries, a pink-iced cupcake and a carrot and walnut cake with cream cheese frosting in this case – are able to be packaged up and taken away to be devoured at a later time.

  2. Simmone Logue's flourless chocolate cake is TDF! I had so many when she used to have a shop in Balmain. Love your photos, by the way.

  7. I would have been slightly disappointed by the lack of cucumber sandwiches (they're my favourite!), but the tart would be an interesting alternative.
