Sugar Hit 2013: Lobby Lounge, Shangri-La Hotel

It’s mid-October but there’s still plenty of time to get your Sugar Hit on, people! Coz it definitely ain’t over until this pregnant lady pops heh.

Shangri-La have returned in fine form this year after a few years of being lost in sugar wilderness, with a dessert plate designed by Anna Polyviou and described elaborately as “Milk chocolate delice; passionfruit curd, grue cacao crunch, salted caramel, roast hazelnut, honey thyme pear; strawberries ‘n’ crème graffiti lollipop”. Paired with Brown Brothers’ Orange Flora & Muscat, the drink is kindly swapped for ice tea, hot chocolate, coffee and tea for myself as well as several driving parties in our group.

I start up the lollipop end and the white chocolate is sugary as expected, with a fudgy and fragrantly strawberry-flavoured centre with some pink chocolate beads. The layered verrine in the centre proves to be the favourite component of many at our table with its many textures of both passionfruit and chocolate. The milk chocolate delice has a pleasingly chewy jaconde-type base and is a milk chocolate lover’s delight – its creamy spheres sandwiched in the centre being almost as light as a mousse. Adorned with fresh raspberries as well as sprigs of baby mint, it is sweet without managing to be cloying.

*Shangri-La is serving their Sugar Hit from 6pm each day, with the last seating at 10pm, so book ahead to avoid disappointment!*

  7. Seems like you had a great time :) This made me miss travelling. I used to jet off somewhere for vacations before I got too busy managing a Chinese Restaurant in Capalaba area. You just inspired me to go out more, hahahah!
